Splinter Cell Conviction Demo Impressions
Date: 20.03.2010

Firstly it was surprisingly short for a 1.9GB demo download. It was a lot of data cap to use for such a short little demo in a country still restricted by very limited personal data caps. Let me get on to the demo.
What you got. Firstly a grainy intro that is set 3 years after Sam Fisher goes rogue. Then you get to participate in what is now a semi-well known interrogation scene that has been talked about a lot, so maybe that downplayed the effect of it. Even so it was quite an interesting, and adult, introduction to a game designed to be more adult and more emotionally engaging. That is obvious from the outset.
Thirdly you get to sneak around in a very small segment of a mission, and try a few different things out. Maybe 10-15 minutes worth.
Now I used to be a huge Splinter Cell fan right from when the first one came out. Sneaking, Curious AI, good controls. I stayed a fan and was sold completely with Chaos Theory. Best Splinter Cell game ever. And then there was Double Agent. They tried to be emotionally engaging there too. They also tried to be clever with certain areas and took away some of Sam's sneaking abilities. They tried to leave you hanging at the end. Fail.Fail.Fail. Now I have a terrible bitter taste in my mouth when the name Splinter Cell comes up. Do I want to get this game????
Well as you may be able to tell I had a negative attitude but I tried to go into the demo open minded. What I saw made me interested to try more, and I guess that is what it is intended to do, and it worked. I will have to see a bit more so I will keep my eyes on Gametrailers.com to see what comes out. But the interactive storyline that is displayed in your environment works, the fading to black and white also seems to work. I'm not sure about the sonar googles instead of night vision, as it just doesn't seem Sam Fisher but maybe I just need to get over that. If it works and works well, then well done. It is also obvious they have tried to up the action, but again I am not sold on the mark and execute as it just seems a bit of a cop out so they can put more enemies in and make it seem like you are awesome without giving you the opportunity to train your controller skills. There is an emphasis on less observation and sneaking because of that. Again, not sold on it yet and I have to see a bit more before I will be making my final decision.
Finally my thought is this. I am not convinced that Splinter Cell Conviction isn't going to have problems that have plagued Ubisoft's games in recent years. Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, Assassins Creed 2. All these games had almost game ending glitches that ruined your saves. What have they done to remedy this?
I do hope however that this Splinter Cell game is fantastic. Why? Because I am a fan of the franchise, and because I can't do the final challenge in Batman:AA. And there's the rub, will it measure up to that game Batman:AA? Big question. We'll have to wait and see.
