Is the Xbox getting USB memory support ?

Date: 19.03.2010

Joystiq have received some very interesting news as quoted below, but it looks like the Xbox360 may very well support USB memory devices from 1GB in size up to 16GB in size. This also looks to be happening with their Spring update which is of course our Autumn and so very close as I can already feel a chill in the air. Must be time to spend more time inside keeping warm by my Xbox. However this memory update is pretty important as it looks like you will be able to do everything on it, from storing profiles, to arcade titles, DLC, and even a game or 2 size depending. Also you can have up to 2 linked for the console, for a grand total of 32GB.

What does this mean however? It means that Microsoft will be getting out of the memory unit business that was way over priced, but they are keeping their over-priced hard-drive side of things.
Who is it good for? It is good for those who have an arcade version or are still with the old 20GB version and don't want to pay for the over-priced 120GB or haven't been able to get it in NZ because they haven't been brought in for so long. This is good if you want to keep your arcade games on one, your DLC on another and free up your 20GB hard-drive for storing your games themselves.

I wonder though, does it mean that I can put my arcade games I have downloaded for my kids on one and let them play that on the main Xbox while I play Borderlands from my Hard-drive on my other Xbox. That would be beneficial.

Here is the Joystiq quote.

Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.
